Salt and Silver by the sea: fine dining in a pile dwelling

St. Peter-Ording. In St. Peter-Ording, the two friends Cozy & Jo are actually just doing what they love to do every day: being in a beautiful place, surfing and cooking. If you order oysters, Friesian merguez, fine dry-aged Holstein beef or farm-to-table vegetables in their “Salt & Silver” restaurant, you are guaranteed a magnificent view of the sea and the most beautiful sunsets. The cool, casual location, which is now also listed in the Michelin Guide, stands on stilts directly on the North Sea beach. The cuisine with regional ingredients from the Eiderstedt peninsula is simple, not fussy, but with the best that the north has to offer: refined, delicious, often cooked over an open fire. Want to try it first? There are also fish sandwiches here , a staple of the north German cusine, but with real class.

Guests can enjoy not only sweet treats but also savory dishes.

Kittlitz. If you cycle around the beautiful Schaalsee lake in the Duchy of Lauenburg, you can’t miss the Dielencafé Kittlitz. And that’s a good thing, because you should definitely get off the saddle here. Hungry and thirsty cyclists land straight in a wonderful idyllic courtyard with colorful flowers, secluded spots, free-range chickens and numerous swans. Inside you are greeted by a cozy country house atmosphere, outside on the terrace you have a view of the Kittlitzer Hofsee nature reserve. The food is accompanied by hearty snacks or homemade meringue filled with cherries, gooseberries or strawberries by hostess Britta Rühs. Incidentally, the café takes its name from the long hallway of the old farmhouse, where Britta’s parents used to serve their guests coffee and cake, which was so close to the stables that the cows could see into the café.

Want to try some? Wine tasting in the courtyard

Malente. Surprise: vines thrive in the gently rolling hills of Holstein Switzerland. Which is why Melanie Engel and Karsten Wulf cultivate eight hectares of fungus-resistant varieties such as Solaris, Souvignier gris and Cabernet Cortis and press them into fresh, delicately aromatic wines. During vineyard tours and wine tastings, guests can learn more about one of the northernmost wine-growing regions in Germany. Melanie and Karsten also have green fingers. Their strawberry and raspberry plantations bear abundant fruit, which they bake into delicious cakes and tarts such as strawberry tiramisu. These, in turn, can be enjoyed in the farm café with a view of the vineyard and the self-picking fields. A little tip: the sumptuous breakfast buffet on Sundays, of course with homemade delicacies. All to the cheerful clucking of the chickens. And how about a homemade Secco to go with it?
